Drive to the provincial town of Topola, situated in the romantic, hilly region of Oplenac. The hill of Oplenacin the heart of the picturesque Sumadija region, is a foundation of the modern Serbian State. This is where the first rebellion against the Ottoman Empire took place, 200 years ago, when Serbia started building a modern State. Connected with the Serbian insurrection against the Turkish rule (1804), Topola has been serving as a mausoleum for the members of Karadjordjevic dynasty. A white marbled five domed mausoleum, decorated with impressive mosaics in 15.000 nuances, depicting biblical scenes copied from medieval frescoes from more than 70 Serbian Orthodox Monasteries. A magnificent Church of Saint George is to be visited, and the Museum of King Peter I of Serbia. Lunch on the way. Return to Belgrade. |
